What You Should Do in Your Garden During October

October is the time when you should start getting ready for up and coming winter even though we are only a few weeks into autumn. The jobs that need doing this month involve tidying the garden and harvesting any grown fruit.

Your Lawn
Your garden lawn should be starting to slow down with less growth so you are only looking at one or two more cuts. On these occasions raise the cutting height on your mower to give the roots more protection over the up and coming winter months.

You may live in a cold area, if so now is the time to carry out any work to the lawn. Use an autumn lawn feed to help your lawn through the colder months.

Make sure any fallen leaves are cleared; these will block sunlight from getting to your lawn which could lead to your grass turning yellow.

Your Greenhouse
Now is the time to give your Greenhouse a clean. Emptying your Greenhouse completely will make this an easier job all round. Cleaning now will clear any dead plants making the area ready for the next season. Once clean you can put your plants back.

It's also a good time to think about insulating your Greenhouse, bubble wrap can work wonders and can also help bring the cost of your heating bills right down over the colder months.

It's important to ensure that you don't get your Greenhouse too wet at the moment. This could lead to mould and your plants dying off.

Despite the weather becoming cooler, you can still grow Sweet Peas during the next few months ready for Springtime ready to be planted out in March next year.

Your Vegetable Garden
Did you cut back any Asparagus you may have had growing last month? Well if not, make sure this is done this month.

Onions should be planted now to be ready for next Spring and early Summer.

You can cut off the tops of your Peas and Beans this month. These can then be cut up and added to your compost. Only dig the roots in the next time you dig the bed in, the compost will then act as fertilizer.

Maybe start to think about digging your beds over in the next few weeks, frost will then help to break lumps down.

You should be harvesting any Pear or Apple trees you may have.

Now is a good time to think about planting spring cabbages, do beware of the pigeons and make sure you cover these up.

Your Borders
If you have any herbaceous plants that aren't flowering or have simply got too big, these can now be divided.

With frost now threatening you need to look at removing any summer bedding before these plants are killed off.

If the frost has blackened your Dahlias it's time for them to be moved to a cold greenhouse so the frost can't get to them.

Flowering bulbs for Spring should be planted now. October is also a very good month to plant trees.

Garden Pruning
If you didn't cut back your hedges last month, then this is your last chance before winter.

Prune back your Budlia, Roses and Lavatera to about half. This will stop the wind from damaging the roots during the winter months as well as tidy them up. Tie back any shoots you have on climbing roses.

Garden Birds
If you have bird feeders and baths then be sure that these are now kept clean. Also keep them well stocked up with different bird feeds. This will help the birds you have been feeding over the next few months.

If you want to feed Hedgehogs over the coming months, then be sure to use special foods that are available on the internet or in pet shops. It's a common myth that Hedgehogs should be fed bread and milk, this can be dangerous to them, so do stick to foods that are available and you will be pleased to know that they love Slugs.

Professors - Should You Hire Someone to Help You & Where Should You Find an Excellent Assistant?

Are you busy?  Are you working on MANY projects?  Do you have enough help to get your work done (let alone keep your personal projects moving forward)?  Is it worth it to hire an assistant (even out of your own pocket)?

Here are four specific questions and four specific answers to help you make your own determination:

How did you find your current assistant?

My first one was the person I brought away from the university with me...(note:  the VERY first assistant I ever had was when I was an assistant professor, owed more on student loans than my first year's salary, but knew I didn't want to forego tenure just so I could save a few dollars.  I had a series of assistants while I was at the University, most of whom I paid for out of my own pocket...and I don't regret one dollar that I spent).

The second one was a good friend of mine who is a teacher and wanted to earn extra money...and I actually tried to get her to quit her job at the District she was so good, but alas, she didn't.

The third one (who still works for me and has now for over three years) was a referral from a neighbor. When I could see that I needed someone to replace Sue (the teacher who had just gotten too overloaded), I started telling everyone.  My next door neighbor sent Lisa (who is an optometrist who wanted to stay home with her kids) to me.  She also lives in our neighborhood but I'd never met her.  Word of mouth/referral made it happen.

Since then, I have added others: another neighbor (connected through through Lisa), who is an accountant and a stay-at-home mom and does my bookkeeping (and more).  I also have hired Heather Nelson in Seattle (Champion Assistants) who does a bunch of projects (I found her through a forum for entrepreneurs), and Kelley who is doing my webwork (and I got her through a referral from a friend/colleague at the university).  You can see the myriad ways that assistants can come into your life.

How did you evaluate them to determine that you could trust them and they would be a good choice?

I give people baby projects to take on and watch them like a hawk to make sure things are done well and that the assistants are trustworthy.  Part of why I like referrals is because it does assist with the trust aspect.  Then, gradually, I give the assistant larger and larger projects and keep checking to make sure that we have the same work ethic, customer service, and excellence expectations. I have made the mistake of giving too much, too fast and it overwhelmed the person (given my expectations), so for a number of reasons, I highly recommend building up slowly.

What are the first three steps for me to take?

** Make a list of EVERY SINGLE THING you know perfectly well that someone else could be doing rather than you. Both personal and professional.  The life of a professor is a 24/7/365 job...and you need help in all areas of your life so you can excel at your professional endeavors as well as maintaining the personal relationships and projects.

** Start telling people that you are looking for an assistant.  Just get the word out and the Universe will help answer your request.  You never know where the referral will come from.

** During the summer, I'd even hire teenagers in your neighborhood to do some errands or other kinds of work like that. This helps you get in the habit of knowing that someone else can pick up your cleaning, go to Trader Joe's for you, run to the post office, etc.  I keep several teens well employed throughout the year.

How much will it cost?

Cost...I pay a 7-year old $3/hour to put stamps on envelopes. I pay $6/hour to teens to do a variety of different kinds of work. I pay most assistants $19 - 55/hour for higher level tasks.  I know that is a huge range, but it depends on a number of factors.

Here's what you need to consider:  What is it worth to get your work done, keep your life in order, and live to tell about it?  A lot.  Hiring someone to help you (or LOTS of "someones" to help you) is a prudent investment.

College Students Should Go After the Jobs That They Want

Most college students gradually become more clear about their direction and goals, as they move from one year of college to the next. Therefore, once you figure out what you want to do after college, you should go after the job that you want. Don't assume that employers will find you. They won't.

Preparation Is Critical - Employers with the jobs that you want are likely to interview many candidates for each job. Make the assumption that every employer has one job opening for every 8 to 15 students they interview, maybe many more. Therefore, you must devote your college years to the factors that will maximize your ability to compete. Success lies in the quantity and quality of your preparation. Only great preparation can result in great success.

Answer This Question - Why should the employer select you? Throughout college, your job is to accumulate the education, experience, accomplishments and qualities that will make this question easy for you to answer.

To find greater success, you can follow these five steps:

Do Some Research - During your freshman or sophomore year, Identify a few employers that offer the type of work that interests you. Find out what they will be looking for and what will impress them. To do this, you can use the internet and tap your network. Be sure to talk with Professors, Advisors, Career Services, Alumni, Recent Interviewees, Recent Hires, Competitors, Recruiters and the Employers themselves. Until you know exactly what the employers are looking for, you can't properly prepare. Learn about the qualifications and experience of the candidates who were hired last year. Then, set out to do more and better than those recent hires.

Decide How You Will Differentiate Yourself - Your good looks aren't enough. Exceptional Grades, Technical Skills, Accomplishments, Work Experience, Communication Skills, Leadership Skills, People Skills, Responsibilities Held, Problems Solved, Revenue Generated, etc. Few candidates are hired simply because they have good grades. The best employers want more than that. They prefer well rounded students who can get things done, communicate, lead and interact with a diverse group of people. They will want to hear about the specifics. Be prepared to tell stories and provide detailed examples.

Get Some Practical Experience - Remember what you learned from your employer research. Then, spend two to three years doing the things that these potential employers want. This includes gaining experience through part time and summer work and participating in the academic, campus and local community to build a list of impressive accomplishments. Take care to develop your best personal qualities, including your leadership, communication and people skills. Note: If you have few accomplishments during your college years, employers won't have any reason to believe that you will make a significant contribution to their organization. The best candidates find ways to demonstrate their skills, knowledge, energy and capabilities. They give employers more than one reason to hire them.

Obtain The Tools You Will Need - There are many tools that you will need for your job search. Don't wait to get started on them. You will need an outstanding resume built around your accomplishments, interviewing skills that demonstrate your communication skills and self-confidence, a broad network that can be used to gather information, a list of relevant employment web sites and employment agencies, impressive references, a list of well researched employers and a list of questions you will ask. Give careful thought to your clothing and accessories, your overall appearance and body language. Smart candidates don't leave anything to chance. They gather and prepare an outstanding array of tools, in a effort to gain an advantage.

Conduct A Thorough And Comprehensive Job Search - You may very well need to contact more than 200 employers before you receive a job offer. That's why you must spend so much time getting ready. It's also the reason that you must work so hard at finding a job. Good jobs don't fall into your lap. You earn them.

Take advantage of your previous research. At the beginning of your final year, begin to contact every employer on your list. Tap your network to obtain information and contact that can help with your search. Visit the appropriate employment web sites and contact some employment agencies. Do more research and keep going.

Make certain the your resume emphasizes you accomplishments, responsibilities and capabilities. Be prepared to explain how you made things better for others. Show employers not only what you did but, more importantly, the results of what you did and how those results benefited your group, college, employer, organization or community. Paint a picture that leaves little doubt that you are willing and able to take on the responsibility for getting things done.

As you begin to conduct your job search, everything must come together. Your research, your strategy for differentiation, your experience and accomplishments, the tools you have prepared and your effort and enthusiasm must all be focused on the same goal. Don't operate as though you will obtain a job offer from your campus interviews. Only a tiny percentage of students, across the country, will get job offers that way.

Clearly, the more effort you commit to preparation, the better your chances for job hunting success. The number of interview opportunities that you generate will greatly depend on the diligence you have demonstrated in previous years. Start early!

Should You Respond to Online Job Postings and "Help-Wanted" Ads?

Let's assume that you've just spent a lot of time preparing, strategizing and tooling-up for a job search. Now, you're finally ready to get into action. What's the first thing you're likely to do? Of course! Go online (or open a newspaper or trade publication), to start scanning the job postings and help-wanted ads. You need to send out as many resumes as you can, as quickly as possible, right? WRONG!!!

Most job seekers focus far too much time and energy on Internet job postings and help-wanted ads. When the job market is tight and no one's hiring, these are the WORST places to look for a job - your probability of success is close to zero. Our experience shows that only one job in ten is ever advertised, and only one in ten of those is any good! That leaves about 1% of help-wanted ads and job postings that are worthwhile. Newspaper ads represent the bottom of the job-seeking barrel: entry-level opportunities, high-turnover jobs, and straight-commission sales positions. This means that only 1% of "good jobs" are ever advertised - jobs for which 100% of your competition is also applying.

With the advent of the Internet, of course the whole want-ad world changed forever. "Job board" web sites now number in the thousands, with more popping-up every day. While these web services have improved the convenience and efficiency of finding job postings, unfortunately the quality of the listings, and the results you can expect from them, are usually very poor.

And yet, every job seeker seems to spend hours and hours sending resumes into this "online black hole," hoping that maybe one, just one, of their resumes will land on the right person's desk and generate the interview they've been dreaming of. (Sound familiar?)

If responding to advertised job postings is clearly the least effective job-seeking method, what's a job seeker to do? When you learn of a specific job opportunity at one of your Target Companies (in this case, through a job posting or want-ad), spend the bulk of your time on the other, more productive job search methods!

See the list of strategies below for some good suggestions. Don't answer ALL the help-wanted ads and job postings that are related to your background and qualifications. Instead, respond only to a select few. When you do reply to an opening, follow these guidelines:

Give yourself a limit of two hours per week (about 5% of your time) to read and respond to help-wanted ads and job postings, and select only the ones that ideally match your goals and qualifications.

Find someone through your network who works at (or used to work at) the company, or at least knows a lot about it.

Ask probing questions about the company, and determine if it would be a good fit for your background and preferences.

If it is a good fit, network yourself to the appropriate hiring manager (not Human Resources), and try to schedule an appointment.

In the meeting, focus on the company's needs and challenges, and explain how your related accomplishments could be of direct help.

Of course, this approach requires that you have the right career tools, that you've practiced your interviewing skills, and that you can bring some "finesse" to the process. Although these strategies don't work every time, when they do work, you can really win big! And it sure beats "sending a resume to Human Resources," where it will probably wind-up buried in a pile of other resumes.

While it is tempting to sit at your computer all day hitting the "send" button, this is really the laziest way to search for a new opportunity. Try to view the online job postings and "want-ads" merely as indicators or "hints" of where the opportunities are - and then concentrate on actively leveraging your network to get you inside for a meeting with the hiring managers!
