If the payment of contractor is more than $600 annual, report the wages on IRS Form1099-MISC to authorities. Sign an agreement putting forth the terms of your business relationship. Both employee and contractor hire agreements should include the work/product/service copyright laws to guard against misuse or leaking out the proprietary information of your company.

Seven Keys For Reducing Job Search Stress

Reducing and managing stress is one of the keys to a successful search. Too much stress and you appear desperate. Not enough and people question your motivation. Only you can decide how much stress is the right amount! Here are seven steps you can take to significantly lower stress, improve your effectiveness, and ultimately shorten your job hunt.

1. Have a realistic understanding of how long a job search takes. As a general rule of thumb figure it will take anywhere from a week (on the high side) for every $1000 of income to a month (on the low side) for every $10,000 of income. Many job seekers have an unrealistic time frame for finding their next job. It always takes longer than you think. When you don't have a realistic expectation for how long it can take it is easy to feel stressed out.

2. Develop a job search action plan. Map out where you want to go and how you are going to get there. Set specific daily and weekly goals; then develop a contingency plan for when Plan A doesn't work. Once your plan is in place and you are emotionally prepared - take action!

3. Reduce unnecessary expenses immediately. Minimizing financial responsibilities and maximizing financial resources will significantly reduce stress. This is not the time to take your dream vacation. The greater your financial resources the more flexibility you have to accept the right job offer rather than grabbing the first one that comes along.

4. Think of your job search as a job. Devote as much time to it as you would to a job. Consider all of the extra hours you spent working in a job you did not particularly like. Isn't it worth spending twenty-five to forty hours a week looking for work you will enjoy?

5. Spend time on the right activities. Do spend time developing high quality marketing materials - like a résumé, fact sheet, and reference list; networking with friends and colleagues who can connect you to the right people or opportunities; and following up with potential employers. Don't spend hours on the internet searching job boards for the 'right' job. Instead use the internet to research organizations, gain information about specific industries, and network with people who can assist with your search.

6. Evaluate your progress on a weekly basis. Stay on top of your search so that you can tell immediately if your search starts to stall and take steps to get it back on track. Assess what is working - do more of it. Determine what isn't working and revise your approach. If you are still stuck consider working with a career coach.

7. Take time to refresh your mind, body, and soul. Looking for a job, especially when you don't have one, is something you carry around 24/7. Remind yourself to set regular office hours and knock off at a reasonable hour. That includes taking time off on the weekends. Take a walk, go to the gym, escape with a good book, or have coffee with a friend.

When I was searching for my first corporate job, I was called a few days after an interview and told, "Thank you for coming in, however we've decided to offer the position to someone else." I politely thanked her and let her know I appreciated the interview and follow-up call. The next day, I received a call from the same person with a job offer. I remember her words so vividly: "I'll bet you weren't expecting to hear from me!" It turns out the other applicant had opted for another offer and I was the runner-up.That was an exciting call and I was so thankful that I handled the initial rejection call so well.

This example is just one reason why attitude and tact are so important in job searching. You can have the best suit and a nice, glossy resume but if your attitude is not positive, personable, and confident you could be burning bridges you didn't even know existed!

Because most companies only accept resumes electronically, there is much less real-life interaction between the job seeker and potential employer than there used to be. That makes it even more important to leave a good impression when you do talk to a person. Here are some of those situations and how to handle them:

Following up after sending your resume: Be clear and concise about why you are calling. Tell them you respect their time and want to quickly let them know that you are available if they have any questions about your resume (and don't forget to say your name very clearly - twice if possible). Getting a rejection call: Like the example at the top shows, it pays to be kind even if you don't have to. Of course, reacting with a 'I don't want to work for you anyway' statement is totally inappropriate, but it would also be a bad idea to pout or shrug off a rejection with a "Yeah, okay. Bye." Remain gracious and let them know you are available if any other similar positions become open.

A great resume and new suit will get you in the door for an interview, but getting past those first few hurdles in the screening and interviewing process is about a positive and confident attitude. How To Find a Good Paying Job

You may be reading this because you are unemployed or looking for a career change. Whether you're old or young, job-hunting is very stressful and challenging. and many people give up good paying jobs in favor of jobs that are easy to come by but pay less. Why settle for less? Here are some tips on how you can turn your job hunting strategies into a job that pays well and is more satisfying.

1. Don't settle for less. Aim for jobs that pay well and is satisfying. This means looking at the help wanted section in a critical way and steering clear of fast-food jobs and other temporary employment. Search for jobs in government or in professional positions where the entrance criteria is a little bit more discerning and challenging.

If you are still in high school, you may want to continue with the basics, such as concentrating on math and sciences. One day you might find yourself writing a government entrance test that involves math and problem-solving skills. If your math skills aren't so good, don't worry. Check out your local school board which may have continuing education courses to hone your math or writing skills.

I personally found myself in this situation where I wrote a government test, and got stumped on some of the math questions. Soon, I enrolled in a math course and passed a job exam where some math was involved.

2. Be enthusiastic and dress for success. Don't show up for a job interview in jeans and a t-shirt. It may mean borrowing or buying a business jacket and suit or skirt. Ditch those high heels for basic flats. Although suits are uncomfortable, remember you are only dressing up to impress, and you won't need to dress up depending on the job you apply for.

When I worked for a technology based and relatively good paying company, everybody dressed casually and jeans and t-shirt were the norm.

3. Spend quality time on job search. I personally spent a few hours a day sending out resumes and searching out good jobs. Although some job experts state that looking for a job is a full-time job, I feel that this pace is a bit too psychologically tiring and stressful.

I would get up in the morning, enjoying a healthy breakfast and coffee. Afterwards, I spent time in a job club where I applied for a few online jobs, specifically focusing on the good paying ones. The problem with most job-seekers are that some will send out their resume to all jobs.

Be warned that there are a lot of low paying jobs advertised in job or employment centre. These are the ones not to apply for, since in a lot of cases, these are dead-end and unsatisfying jobs that do little to ease your finances.

4. Hone your skills. If you are afraid of communicating, realize that good paying jobs start with a job interview. Great candidates are good communicators. Don't worry if you are lacking in those skills. Joining a public speaking club is a great way to practice communication skills among a group of ambitious and confident individuals.

5. Develop a positive mental outlook. You are what you think and if you think well of yourself, this will communicate on your face and in your psychological outlook. Although job-hunting is stressful, it is important to develop other interests, such as pursuing a hobby or overcoming a childhood fear.

When I was a child, I was a poor swimmer and hated my swim class. I recently took a swim class to overcome my fear of water, and now enjoy swimming on a regular basis. Learning new skills will give you confidence and anything that makes you feel good, is a fine thing.

So the first thing to do is sit down with your personnel director or a career counselor and review what you've done since gaining your work experience. Review what areas of the institution you've worked in and, more importantly, which one's you haven't.

Now it's time to take an online college prep course. Make sure to find out what their success record is before signing up. The higher the success rate, the better the school.

You should not ignore any aspect of the review, but pay special attention to areas you didn't work in. Most senior nurses report that if they were hung up anywhere in the exam, it was in these areas. Also check to see if the prep course comes with sample questions. Don't ignore these drills as they are probably the best prep you'll get from the entire course. Even if they aren't the questions you'll face in the exam, they'll give you an idea of what to expect.

Of course, another advantage of taking the prep online is you can do it when it's convenient to you. As you've already found out, being the rookie on the team means you get the odd shifts. The online prep exam doesn't care if you take your sessions at three in the afternoon or the morning; just make sure to take all of them.

One last important note: Even if you fail the first time, the profession is forgiving. Many of the best RN's in the field admit they had to take the NYCLEX a second, even a third, time. If anything, with further prep it made them better RN's because they now knew what they really were facing.

Hiring an Insulation Contractor - The 11 Questions You MUST Ask

Choosing a contractor to do work on your home is a difficult and oftentimes daunting process. It usually starts with a search on the internet for local contractors who do the type of work you're looking to have done, or paging through the yellow pages. Then, once you've compiled a list of contractors, it's time to pick up the phone (or start typing emails). Unfortunately, there's no way around this part of the process. Simply put, if you're serious about having work done to your home, then you have to take the time to reach out to contractors and let them know you're interested.

This is where things get tricky. Because let's face it, every contractor is different-they have different ways of doing business, different operating hours, different payment terms, different products with different features and benefits...it can make comparing apples to apples very confusing. Keeping it all straight can be time-consuming at best and at worst cause you to throw up your hands in defeat.

But once initial contact is made, there are things you can do to make the process of choosing a contractor easier and less of a headache.

Trusting your instincts is key. Most contractors are honest, hardworking individuals dedicated to making your home more beautiful, user-friendly, and energy efficient. But there are some contractors out there who are in business to rip consumers off and rob them of their hard-earned money. Some red flags: proposals/contracts that lack detail or leave you with more questions than answers; representatives who are late or don't show up at all; sloppy, unprofessional workers; websites/literature with overinflated claims that seem too good to be true; shady salesmen pushing products you don't need. A lot of consumers have encountered one or more of these things, and have had encounters with a less-than-reputable contractor.

If this has happened to you, don't let it happen again, and don't let it stop you from renovating your home. Here are 11 questions you absolutely must ask every contractor you meet with. There are other questions, of course, but these ten can make or break the contractor/homeowner relationship.

1. Is your company registered with the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office? In 2008, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act. The law requires that all contractors who perform at least $5,000 worth of home improvements per year must register with the Attorney General's Office. This includes insulators. Registration with the PA Attorney General doesn't absolutely guarantee that a contractor is legit, but it does prove that the company carries insurance and provides for certain consumer protection initiatives: The law creates a criminal penalty for home improvement fraud; requires all contracts for home improvements of more than $500 to be in writing and be signed by the consumer and the contractor; and limits down payments or deposits for any home improvement project for which the total price is more than $1,000. Offering or performing home improvements without being registered is a violation of the act and may subject the contractor to an enforcement action and possible civil penalties. Consumers can call 1-888-520-6680 to check whether a contractor is registered.

2. Does your company carry insurance? Some contractors don't carry insurance for the simple fact that it can be expensive. But any reputable contractor - insulators included - should have both General Liability insurance and a Workers Compensation policy. It shows that the contractor cares about his business, his clients, and his employees. Imagine the consequences if an un-insured contractor has to deal with a less-than-perfect project or, heaven forbid, one of their employees is injured on the job or damages customer property. What a nightmare!

3. What are your payment terms? Some contractors require a deposit before work begins, some bill upon completion. Some accept credit cards and some don't. Every contractor is different. Best to ask up front what you can expect BEFORE signing that contract.

4. Have your installers undergone training or received manufacturer certification to install your products? Any reputable contractor should have a training program for all their field personnel. Additionally, some insulation manufacturers require on-site training and certification of any company that wants to become a contractor to install its products. Don't be afraid to ask about a contractor's experience level. An experienced and professional insulator should always be more than willing to tell you about it. But be forewarned: There are some insulators out there that are poorly trained, if at all. Gasp! Can you imagine hiring an accountant to install new plumbing? Or a plumber to do your taxes? Absurd! But it's true that some insulation contractors, in hurry to get a job done, hire people off the street and ill-prepare them for something as technical as installing insulation.

5. Is the completion date definite or flexible? This is a tough question. It depends on many factors: What time of year is it? How busy is the contractor? What type of insulation is being installed? How easy or complex is the project? If your project is small and you live close by, then the contractor may have an easier time scheduling your project than a project that's larger and farther away. Some types of insulation are affected by certain environmental conditions - such as extreme heat and cold and wind -- so weather is a factor as well. If a contractor has a lot of work lined up, or it's the busy season, it may take several weeks to complete your project. A contractor should tell you what their lead time is, but if they don't, ask. This will help avoid potential conflicts. The bottom line is, the more flexible you can be, the better. And speaking of busy season, every contractor is different. Landscapers are obviously busiest in the summer. HVAC contractors are typically busiest in the spring and fall. Depending on the type of insulation they install and the market they cater to (residential or commercial), insulators can be busy all year long. The residential insulation market usually starts in early fall and continues through the holidays, as homeowners prepare their homes for the long cold winter ahead. However, any time of year is a good time to insulate. After all, insulation will help you save money cooling your home too. 6. Do you have technical information / safety data / MSDS information for the products you install? Every insulation contractor should have all the technical data for each and every product it installs - in their office, in their vehicles or both. You may not need to see all the data on the product that the contractor proposes to install in your home, but you may - and should - ask about any issues that might pertain to the health and safety of you and your family.

7. Do you offer a warranty? Any reputable contractor should offer some sort of warranty or guarantee. That's just good business practice. The company I work for, for example, warrants that all insulation products it installs to be free from defects of workmanship and material for a period of one (1) year.

8. How detailed are your contracts? This is more important than you might think. Questions left unasked and little details left un-written can lead to conflicts later. If in doubt, ask. Be wary of any contract that is very general, lacking details, or open to interpretation. *Note: The Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act, effective as of July 1, 2009, established required contract terms such as: a description of the work; an approximate start date and completion date; the total price of the contract; and notice of the consumer's right to cancel the contract.

9. Who's responsible for prep work and clean up? Some homeowners are real particular and prefer to prep an area themselves and/or clean up using their own materials/equipment. Others prefer to let the experts do the prep work and clean up. Either is fine, of course, just make sure you ask what the contractor is responsible for and what is expected of you, the homeowner. And let them know your preferences. This will help avoid conflicts later, and should be spelled out in any contract you sign.

10. Do you have references? If a contractor has references, it shows that they care enough about their business to ask past clients to grade them on their performance. And if a contractor is reputable, they should have lots of positive feedback archived and be willing to share it with you. Be sure to ask for a list of client references. Most homeowners don't, and then they wonder why they had a bad experience. Keep in mind that even reputable contractors sometimes have projects that go less than perfect, and a contractor's reference list should include those projects as well, if only to show how the contractor stepped up to the plate to resolve the issues.

11. Do I need a Thermographic Inspection of my house? A popular - and effective - way to detect thermal defects and air leakage in your home is with thermography, or infrared scanning. Thermography measures surface temperatures and heat variations by using infrared video and/or still cameras. With the device an energy auditor or inspector will be able to tell where air leakage is occurring, and where insulation is missing or inadequate. Some services go one step further and include a blower door test-a powerful fan that mounts to the frame of an exterior door and pulls air out of the home in order to determine a home's airtightness -- and thermograms of electrical and mechanical systems. You should consider, at the very least, a thermographic inspection of your house to see whether your current insulation is sufficient. It's especially important if you own an older home, where the existence and condition of wall insulation is unknown. You can't always tell what's hiding behind the walls of an older building. Now thermal imaging can take the guess work out of installing insulation in existing walls.

Asking these questions will enable you to filter out the reputable contractors from the less-than-reputable ones. And hopefully, the answers you receive will allow you to make a confident, stress-free decision about which contractor is best for your project.
